PM18 Report – Day Four: Thursday, July 26

Good morning PM18!

Time flies when you’re having fun. Can you believe that today is the last day of Podcast Movement? It feels like we were just getting started.

The goal is to make today count. We strongly encourage you to keep networking and attending sessions that will help you in the next year. Please remember to share with us some of your favorite moments using the social feed in PM18 app.

PM Central is still Open

The exhibitor booths may not be there, but the networking is still in full swing in the Networking Lounge (sponsored by Acuity).

The PM Midway game area (sponsored by Podcasters Paradise) is also still open, and there is nothing like day #4 for some fun time. This is your opportunity to challenge a colleague or new friend to a game.

And if you’ve not found them yet, we’ve got some bean bags, and comfy chairs, on the fifth floor…in case you need to relax (or crash) after the crazy Castbox Party last night.

We urge you to take advantage of these areas on the last day!

Attract More Listeners To Your Podcast Without Spending Tons of Money

This is a guest post from Rob Peterson, Director, Audience Acquisition at Audioboom

You’re all set. You have a great idea, you researched all the best recording equipment and you’re confident you worked out all the kinks in your test episodes. All you have to do is hit publish and release your brand-new podcast to the world! Now that episode one is out, here comes the tough part: Finding people to listen to your show.

With over 525,000 active shows available on Apple Podcastsand more being added every dayattracting listeners is a daunting task for new and existing podcasters. But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to get your show in front of potential listeners and turn them into life-long fans.

Jordan Bonaparte, host and producer of The Night Time Podcast, believes in tapping-in to the podcast community itself. “My most effective audience acquisition activities involved collaborating with similarly themed podcasters.” Jordan says. “These collaborations could include guest appearances on other shows, promo or ad swaps, and/or references to each other’s work on episodes.”

Many podcasters are happy to help promote their peers’ podcasts because they know what it’s like starting out and trying to find new listeners. Promotion from other podcasters can come in the form of an ad or promo swap between shows so that each show can reach new listeners. Another way podcasters can work together is by doing guest swaps where the host of one podcast appears as a guest on another podcast and vice versa.

The hosts of Night Call leveraged guest appearances on Blank CheckThe Daily ZeitgeistLovett or Leave It and Behind The Bastards to reach new listeners. The fans of those shows got a sample of what to expect on Night Call when they might not have otherwise even heard of the show.

So what about social media? Christine Schiefer and Em Schulz, hosts and producers of And That’s Why We Drink, say that Twitter and Facebook were key to growing their audience and turning first-time listeners into dedicated fans. “We were able to connect directly to people with interests in both the paranormal and true crime and communicate with them one-on-one,” says Christine.

The more you communicate with fans one-on-one the more you enrich your relationships and the more likely they are to recommend your show to others. Em agrees, “It’s been really great to see people join the group because their friends recommended [the podcast] or someone they followed on social media gave us a shout out.” Facebook Live, Instagram Live and Snapchat are all platforms you can use to promote your show.

Dan Misener, Head of Audience Development for Pacific Content, a branded podcast network, points to how a well-executed marketing plan can lead to a successful podcast launch and uses the live lecture series-turned podcast, Trampoline Hall, as an example. “When they launched their podcast, they did a bunch of smart things: they reached out to their existing community through their email newsletter, they organized a launch party where they got everyone to subscribe to their new show. It was a well-executed launch designed to appeal to existing podcast listeners and new podcast listeners alike.”

And speaking of newsletters, there are dozens upon dozens of podcast newsletters designed to help die-hard podcast listeners discover new shows. If you’re looking to get more eyes and ears on your show, ask the editors of these newsletters to review your show or a specific episode. As an added bonus agree to share their newsletter with your followers so you both benefit. RadioPublic published a helpful blog listing established podcast newsletters with tips on how to pitch your show!

This is all great, but what about Apple Podcasts and Spotify?

There’s no denying that Apple Podcasts is one of, if not, the biggest player in the game in terms of listening and discovery. Apple Podcast’s top 200 charts are an extremely important tool for discovery. Getting your show on the charts leads to boosts in listens and adds legitimacy to your show, but it’s also extremely competitive and this is where your fanbase comes in. Encourage your fans to help your show grow by reminding them to rate and review at the end of every episode. As those reviews come in your ranking continues to climb within the Apple Podcast ecosystem.

It’s also worth keeping an eye on Spotify as they continue to grow their footprint in the podcast industry. Shows like And That’s Why We Drink have seen tremendous audience growth due to features on Spotify’s desktop and mobile app as well as being included in advertising campaigns for Spotify.

With so many avenues for promoting your show it’s easy to expect immediate results but make sure to keep yourself grounded. This American LifeThe Joe Rogan Experience and WTF with Marc Maron have all been around for a decade or more. It took years for those shows to build the massive audiences they enjoy today. Start with 100 listeners and work your way up from there, and don’t forget the people who helped you get to the top of the charts!

If you’d like to learn more about growing your audience then make sure to join me, Rabia Chaudry (UndisclosedThe 45th)Chelsea Cox (Deliberations)Dossie McCraw (Spotify) and Dan Misener (Pacific Content) at Podcast Movement’s Audience Acquisition Panel, Tuesday, July 24 at 11:00 am in room Grand A/B.

Thanks to Rob Peterson, Director, Audience Acquisition at Audioboom, for this great article!

TWO BIG ALERTS FOR REGISTERED PM18 ATTENDEES

We’ve lowered childcare costs at PM18:

For the past few years attendees have requested childcare to be offered at the event, and this year we have full coverage available to you all four days. However so far, enrollment has been low, so we’d like to help by cutting the cost of enrollment in half.

LEARN MORE AND ENROLL

The host hotel is SOLD OUT (under our block)

We’ve been warning for weeks, and have been adding rooms to our hotel block fast and furious. However the hotel alerted us last week that they are close to capacity, so would not be allowing any more bookings under our discount.

Your three main options at this point are to:

  1. Register directly with the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, and pay the current market price (they’re even making us do this for our remaining internal rooms).
  2. Book one of the hotels within walking distance.
  3. Make use of our handy-dandy roommate finder, AKA our Room Share Document, which can be found below.

FIND A ROOMMATE

Sticking with our 4th of July theme… here is some podcast news to continue the parade!

  • Inalienable Rights – Our friends at Nielsen shared a study that looks at the spending habits of podcast listeners when it comes to holiday necessities like barbecue sauce, ketchup, and sunscreen!
  • This Land is Your Land – If you’re coming to Philly for #PM18, check out this guide from our friends at Aweber, who are based in Philly! We also have another excellent Philly guide put together from PM family member Brian Adoff.
  • Francis Scott Room-Key – The PM18 Host Hotel is at capacity. Our room block is full and has been for about a week. The hotel is even charging Podcast Movement staff the public price for any additional rooms we need to add! What does this mean? It means that you can check out the roomshare doc if you are open to a roommate at the Marriott, or you are welcome to seek alternate accommodations outside of the host hotel…there are a few other great options a short walk away!

We hope that you safely enjoy this holiday with friends and family if you are in the United States. If not, we hope that you continue to enjoy the freedom that podcasting allows you to share your message.

What do Podcast Movement and the World Cup have in common?

Greetings PM Family,You may have heard about a small event happening in Russia over the last 2 weeks called the World Cup. This international soccer (or football, depending on where you are reading this) tournament is held every four years, and captivates millions of fans.Podcast Movement has some similarities to the World Cup.

  • The world cup has over 30 countries represented in the tournament, PM had over 20 countries represented last year, with even more expected this year.
  • The World Cup splits teams into 8 groups, PM splits sessions into 6 tracks.
  • You are not allowed to use your hands in soccer (unless you are the goalie). Podcasting has hands free microphones..

Alright, perhaps it is a stretch to compare the World Cup to Podcast Movement, especially that last one. However, the excitement that is building for Podcast Movement is unmistakable! This week we tip our hat to the World Cup, and share some more exciting updates, including more information on the Google Podcasts session, the announcement of the Audible Pitch Contest (submit your pitch now), preview the Jack Daniel’s PM18 Afterparty, announce the host of this year’s Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame ceremony, and your chance to sign up to record live at PM from the Podcast Pavilion!

Audible Original pitches at Podcast Movement

If you’re a creator attending Podcast Movement, check out this amazing opportunity to pitch your idea to Audible!

Audible is producing a slate of world-class audio programming — from original, immersive experiences like Stinker Lets Loose! to exclusive audio-first memoirs like A Polaroid Guy in a Snapchat World performed by David Spade, to audio reboots of classic comedy such as Dr. Katz: the Audio Files, and much, much more.  And they’re accepting submissions from Podcast Movement participants!

What do you need to submit?

  • 1-2 page pitch treatment
  • Resume/bio for any attached talent
  • Optional: link to audio sample of proposed series, audio sample of past work and/or sample scripts or related writing

Audible is primarily looking for narrative audio with a strong sense of story and a comedic bent. They’re not looking for comedians in a room talking to one another. The pitch should have direction and structure, clearly embrace an audio-first / audio-only experience, and they’re looking to hear about a full and funny world. Audible is also open to other genres, sketch, one-person shows, personal memoirs, and listening experiences that break new ground in audio entertainment.

Please make your submission at adbl.co/pitch

Submissions must be received by July 13, 2018.

A Short List will be selected by July 20th and participants will be invited to pitch their idea to Audible executives live at Podcast Movement on July 25th.

By submitting your idea, you agree to the terms of Audible’s Submission Agreement found here: Submission Agreement.  Audible plans to select three submissions for possible further development into an original audio show for Audible.  If they select your idea for further development and you agree to sign Audible’s standard Development Agreement, $1000 will be payable to you pursuant to the agreement.

Summer breeze, makes me feel fine!

Greetings PM Family,

Summer officially starts tomorrow, but we know that members of this community have not let that prevent the pleasure of sunny days and warmer weather. In fact, things have heated up early for Podcast Movement too, as we have one of our biggest announcements of the year for you (keep reading).

As you know, the best way to enjoy summertime is to have a game plan in place. We’ve got you covered this week! We have some new sessions for you to consider adding to your “must attend” or “watch on the virtual pass” list. We are also proud to announce the speakers selected for Ignite! But first…

Google Podcasts joins the lineup at Podcast Movement

By now you’ve surely heard the news that many of us in podcasting have been waiting for: Google has released a native podcast app. Much like you all, we’re excited for what this means for the future of our industry, but we have questions!

Lucky for you, Podcast Movement 2018 will be your first chance to meet the team behind Google Podcasts, learn about everything you need to know about it as a podcaster, learn more about some of their big initiatives to help improve the space, and more.

We’ll have more information on this in the coming weeks, but in the meantime check out these resources for podcasters that Google sent our way.

Bright lights from the Earwolf, Ramsey Solutions, Midroll and Radiotopia join forces to share knowledge and experience, and help you supercharge your own podcast game.

Don’t blame the heat, summer does not start until tomorrow…

BOOK YOUR HOTEL BEFORE THE ROOMS ARE GONE

This is where we usually try to say something funny, maybe a little quirky. But the truth is, staying down the street from the conference, instead of at the host hotel, is no laughing matter. We know that it’s hot, and we know there are all kinds of distractions. But take a moment to consider how much hotter you’ll be five weeks from now having to walk across town to get to Podcast Movement (and all your friends are staying at the host hotel too).

Ignite Speakers

Podcast Movement, and Ignite sponsor Veritone One, wants to congratulate the speakers selected for this year’s Ignite event on Monday, July 23. You can learn more about the speakers and their talks by clicking here.

Even More Sunshine

  • We’re proud to announce that PM family member Mark Gillespie from WhiskyCast has been picked as one of the 10 finalists for this year’s Spirited Awards as “Best Broadcast, Podcast, or Online Video Series.” The Spirited Awards are part of the annual Tales of the Cocktail conference each July in New Orleans, and honor the best bars and bartenders around the world along with writers, and this is the first year they’ve had a category for podcasts!
  • Digital News Report put out their annual key findings, which includes some interesting podcasting insight!

We are diligently making plans to have the best summer, and the best Podcast Movement, so far! We appreciate your support for this community and look forward to the possibility of seeing you in Philadelphia next month!
