Google Podcasts for Podcasters

Google Podcasts is out for podcast listeners, but here are a few tips that creators can use, provided by the team from Google.

Generate a Google Podcasts link for your feed.

As this rolls out, over two billion Android phones around the world will be able to open your podcast directly in Google Podcasts just by clicking a link. To generate your link, visit our link generator tool. If it says your feed “is not currently indexed by Google Podcasts,” please visit our Developer Guidelines and make sure you are following the instructions there. If you have additional questions, visit our Webmaster Central Help Forum.

The link clicks directly to your podcast in Google Podcasts, and podcasters like Casey Neistat have already discovered this functionality:

Link users on your website using the Google Podcasts badge.

Follow this link to download our brand assets, which you can use on your website to direct listeners to Google Podcasts. Please use them tastefully on white, solid color, or unobtrusive image backgrounds, and don’t rotate or shrink below legible sizes.

Review our Developer Guidelines.

Make sure you are doing everything right to appear in the Google Podcasts app, Google Search, and the Google Assistant. This combination powers a cross-device experience that allows people to pause in one place and resume in another.

We added three new sections to our Developer Guidelines, including instructions for tracking analytics from Google Podcasts, which are also pasted below. As you may know, Google Podcasts streams directly from your hosting provider (Libsyn, Art19, Megaphone, Simplecast, Acast, and many more). These services should make sure to provide the updated data, so podcasters can understand their growth.

  • Track requests from Google Podcasts by looking for the regular expression \b(GoogleChirp|GSA)\/.

  • To separate analytics for Google Podcasts on Android from Google Podcasts on smart speakers, look for the following regular expressions:

    • Google Podcasts on Android: \bGSA\/

    • Google Podcasts on smart speakers: \bGoogleChirp\/

Finally, use your podcast to let your listeners know: Google Podcasts is a new free app that gives personalized recommendations and integrates natively with Google Search and Google Assistant. Many of them are probably looking for a great new Android podcast app, including those who are streaming from their computers.

We’ve created a PDF with suggested talking points for spreading the word on air.

Thanks to Google for providing this content for the podcasters, and make sure to join us at PM18 for your first chance to meet the team from Google Podcasts!

Marlow Hicks – 132 Breese Podcast

Marlow hails from the great city of Chicago but is a Badger to the core. Marlow holds his college days at Madison close to his heart. It was this fondness for his Wisco experience that led this father of his own 18 month old little badger to create a podcast whose name pays tribute to his college home. Marlow finds time to record and release a weekly podcast with his Co-Host in between diaper changes, playtime, and nap time. He’s even learned to edit out the occasional “dada” that sneaks its way into the podcast when his son wakes up looking for his dad. Marlow brings insight and comedy to the 132 Breese Podcast to give the listeners everything they need to know (and a little bit of what they don’t) need to know about what is going on in the world.

Gregory Byerline – Collected Clan

Gregory Byerline, father of three children under age 9, hosts Collected Clan: The Company You Keep featuring conversational biographies of outstanding people he’s met along the way. Every day people doing life their way. He started his podcast as a creative outlet that could be done from home after the kids are asleep and that involves only one other person and a Skype connection. Given the show’s conversational style (not an interview), he doesn’t ask his guests the same questions every time. Except for one question he asks both mothers and fathers when he has them say something to and for their children (of any age) so they can hear their parent’s voice years from now, essentially creating a verbal time capsule.

That question from each guest, previously unreleased material, was then compiled into a Mother’s Day bonus episode a few weeks ago at http://www.collectedclan.com/mothersday with the Father’s Day episode released on Monday before Father’s Day 2018 at http://www.collectedclan.com/fathersday

Since Collected Clan tells stories of individual people, it’s only fitting that the mothers and fathers are spotlighted in their respective roles and outlooks on parenting and their children.

Anthony Arno – Route 66 Podcast

Anthony Arno’s podcast features stories about people living and working along Route 66, but you’d have to go back at least 35 years to find the reason for his interest in a highway that cannot be found on any road map today.

As a college student, Arno experienced rural America from the saddle of a bicycle while biking across America for cancer awareness as part of a memorial to his mother who had died of cancer. It was during that time Arno discovered his passion for both biking and the thrill of the journey instead of the destination.

Years later, Arno became a school teacher and during the early days of Internet dial-up Arno wrote a grant using the schools only computer connected to the outside world. Reflecting back on his days of biking across America as a college student, Arno proposed giving his students the same experience while biking 2000 miles aboard an exercise bicycle stationed in the back of the classroom.

The next question for Arno was what route would the class follow during this year long activity? There were several routes to consider, but Arno found a book in the local library highlighting Route 66, the same highway that was popularized by Nat King Cole in song decades earlier. The musical group Depeche Mode had an electronic version of the song, which Arno was a bit more familiar with. The lyrics of the song provided a musical roadmap of a journey from Chicago to LA.

Route 66 is not the longest or oldest highway in America, but it is certainly one of the most celebrated highways in the world. It’s been featured by Steinbeck in The Grapes of Wrath, it was the highway of mass migration during the Great Depression for people seeking a better life in California, it was popularized in song by Nat King Cole, it was a 1960’s television drama that ran for four years, and most recently it was once again revitalized in the Pixar classic CARS.

Arno first discovered podcasting while traveling through Europe on bicycle back in 2010 and he was instantly hooked to the medium. He knew he wanted to start a podcast, and after attending Podcast Movement in Texas, the constant message was follow your passion when looking to begin a podcast.

Arno made a list of possible podcast topics and Route 66 was just one of many topics being considered. His wife felt the topic was too specific, but Arno believed podcasting about a 2200 mile highway that had been decommissioned by the federal government had the potential for 2200 topics!

The Route 66 Podcast features talks with people living and working along America’s Main Street, Route 66. Arno has had a wide range of guests, ranging from voice actors from the movie CARS to numerous book authors who have written specific books related to Route 66, to a man who has 160 tattoos on his body highlighting Route 66.

Since launching The Route 66 Podcast Arno spends his summer discovering unknown sites along America’s Main Street in addition to giving presentations to groups along the highway interested in promoting the entire road to local communities.

We celebrate Father’s Day with the official PM18 Mobile App, and more!

Greetings PM Family,

A few weeks back, Podcast Movement celebrated mothers, and this week we would like to show our appreciation and celebrate all of the fathers in our community! Did you know that podcasting and fatherhood have a lot in common?

  • A podcaster’s work can often feel like it is endless and, often, thankless.
  • It takes discipline to bring up a consistent show.
  • Your content can be viewed as a pillar of strength as you provide a form of support for your listeners and community.
  • Growing a “podcast” can be compared to raising a child in the sense that it takes time to develop a sound, well-adjusted show.

Speaking of “Sound & Well-adjusted”, we are excited to share with you some cool news this week. The Podcast Movement 2018 app is finally ready for you to download, plus it’s time to vote and select the speakers for this year’s Ignite event!

The PM18 Mobile App is Live

The Podcast Movement mobile app (Sponsored by Podfly) has received high praise in the past, and we’re excited to provide another great user experience this year.

The app will of course include all the essentials, such as the schedule, speaker and attendee profiles, venue and expo floor plans, and a directory of exhibitors and sponsors. However this year we’re excited to feature some popular returning, and all new, features:

  • The popular Social Feed, where you can chat with attendees on the Internal feed screen, or track all the action on the aggregator that pulls together the best from Twitter, Instagram and more.
  • The ability to schedule meetings with attendees and exhibitors, all within the app
  • Gamification with the all new Scavenger Hunt. Visit all of the exhibitors in Podcast Movement Central to earn points, and the chance to win some great prizes
  • Badge scanning, so you can exchange information with exhibitors and fellow attendees, without the need for business cards
  • PM18 photo filters, custom schedule creation, the ability to take notes right inside the app, and a whole lot more!

You can download the app now from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) store, and we look forward to interacting with you on the app! (Note your login email address will be the one you registered with on Eventbrite)

Vote on who will take the stage at Ignite!

Last week we told you Ignite was back (special thanks to Veritone One for making it happen, and for the free drinks)! And this week, we get to participate in one of the unique features of Ignite: you, the attendees, get to vote on the sessions that you’d most like to see take the stage on Monday, July 23!

Voting rules:

  1. Each Podcast Movement attendee gets one vote. (We are collecting email addresses to ensure no one votes twice)
  2. Only registered Podcast Movement attendees may vote.
  3. No cheating. Vote with integrity. If we see a pattern of cheating, that submission will be disqualified.
  4. Have fun! We have some awesome submissions. Give every submission a fair chance when you vote.

Sound like fun? If so, please cast your vote!

Dependable Attentive Diligent,

Team PM“Any Man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a Dad.” – Anne Geddes

It’s time to walk the Podcast Movement stage for PMx, Ignite and more!

Greetings PM Family,

Congratulations to all of the recent graduates represented in this community, and beyond! As you know, graduations happen after the successful completion of a course of study. Graduates traditionally take the stage as a part of their commencement ceremony, to be honored in front of those in attendance.

Podcast Movement does not offer a diploma, per se, but our community does have “students” of various niches in podcasting, who will take the stage in a few short weeks at PM18 in Philadelphia!

PMx Competition – Speaker Announcement

As has been the tradition since PM15, the first folks to take the stage and speak at Podcast Movement will be our PMx Competition participants. PMx offers a chance to fellow PM attendees to take the stage, give a 15 minute TED-like talk, and compete for a chance to take the main stage at the following year’s Podcast Movement.

The emcee for this year’s event is Addy Saucedo. Addy is well-respected in the podcast community, and is the author of the Podcast Planner. We are proud to announce the speakers for this year’s competition:

Andrea Gage – The Boundary Spectrum
Andy Wang – Inspired Money
Anthony Fasano – Engineering Management Institute
Calvin Hicks – The Calvin Hicks Show
Clay Groves – Fish Nerds
David Quinones – Bird Road
Delanda Coleman – Teams on Air by Microsoft
Dr. Sharon Jones – Lady Tech Charmers
Jeni Wren Stottrup – Gritty Birds
Lori Rochino – Simply Designed Life Podcast
Megan Dougherty – One Stone Creative
Reyna S. Walters-Morgan (aka Queen Simone) – Travel Quips Podcast
Rick Clemons – Life Uncloseted

Make sure to mark your calendars to check out the entire competition on Monday, July 23, and the winner announcement at the Hall of Fame Ceremony on Tuesday, July 24.

Last call for speakers at Ignite

You are in luck if you are still looking for an opportunity to be like a graduate, and take the stage at Podcast Movement. The speaker submission process is still open for Ignite!

Ignite is a unique speaking event on Monday evening, July 23 where a series of speakers get on stage for five minutes each to share a Spark. A Spark is a 5-minute talk that consists of 20 slides. Each slide is on a 15-second auto advance. Ready or not, the next slide is on the way!

Each Spark is designed to educate and entertain. You, the attendees of Podcast Movement, vote and choose who gets on stage! Each speaker learns the rules, submits a topic, and then you vote for your favorites. The top voted speakers make it on the main Podcast Movement stage for Ignite! But the real winners are those who show up, enjoy the Sparks – and maybe a drink ticket – at Podcast Movement.

Thanks to Veritone One for making Ignite possible, and for giving you the opportunity to submit your presentation here.

Get a Podcast Makeover at PM18 from Radio Broadcasting Legends!

Graduates always look great in their caps and gowns. Your podcast can look and sound great with some help from top broadcast professionals!

We announced last week that Jacobs Media is partnering with Podcast Movement once again, this year for a 2 day Broadcasters Meet Podcasters track (Sponsored by Beasley Media Group)! One of the sessions on this special track allows attendees to apply to have a critique of their show from some of the best in the business.

The panel of broadcasting experts includes:

Kerri Hoffman – CEO of PRX
Kristen Meinzer – Director of Nonfiction Programming at Panoply
Marissa Magnatta – Producer of the Preston and Steve show on 93.3 WMMR, Philadelphia
Steve Morrison – Co-host of the Preston and Steve show on 93.3 WMMR, Philadelphia
Seth Resler – Digital Dot Connector, Jacobs Media

This is an incredible opportunity for PM attendees! We strongly encourage you to take advantage and apply here.

REGISTRATION COST GOES UP AT MIDNIGHT

Don’t be the only one in class who misses it…

We know what you’re thinking. Graduations are long, boring, and all you do is kill time until you cheer the one person you know when their name is called. Podcast Movement is not like THAT kind of graduation. Think of it more like one where you know EVERYONE walking the stage, and all your friends are there to cheer with you. Yea, it’s kind of like that!

SAVE $200 IF YOU REGISTER FOR PM18 BY MIDNIGHT

CONGRATS AND HONORS

Graduations are an exciting milestone! They spark hope for the future and invite graduates to dream big. Podcasting has a similar effect. Your episodes have the power to encourage, inspire, entertain, educate, build community and so much more. We love the work that you are doing in order to share your voice with the world.

We aim to help you to continue doing this work in the most impactful ways possible. Like graduates, we celebrate you and the opportunities that will develop from your tireless efforts to podcast!

We are proud of you,
Team PM18

“An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” – Benjamin Franklin

The track will combine the energy and electricity of the podcasting space with the expertise, talent, and reach of the broadcasting world. The Broadcasters Meet Podcasters sessions take place on Wednesday, July 25th and Thursday, July 26th, and feature some amazing speakers, including NPR CEO Jarl Mohn.

Jarl will be giving an opening keynote the first day of Jacobs Media’s sessions, and he notes, “I am excited to be part of the ‘Broadcasters Meet Podcasters’ track of Podcast Movement. I look forward to discussing what podcasting has meant for NPR and public radio. We are in the golden age of audio storytelling. Thanks to podcasts, people are connecting with the human voice and narrative again. And discovering public radio in the process. At NPR we have been using podcasts to experiment with new formats, ideas, talent and voices. It is a cornerstone of our growth.”

You can learn more about this track and some of the sessions from yesterday’s Jacob’s Media press release.

The PM18 Schedule is Live!

We are proud to finally bring to you the nearly complete schedule for this summer’s big event! With over 100 sessions, panels, workshops and keynotes, we will not even try to list them all here. You can view them all via the Conference Schedule page on the website. You can start marking your favorites now, and don’t forget to check in on the latest update of amazing speakers taking the stages!

If you’ve not yet registered, you may want to consider getting a pass that includes the Virtual Ticket when you do. As you know, it is impossible to attend all of the sessions, so the next best strategy is to plan which presentation you will attend in person, and which ones you will make plans to view later on with the Virtual Ticket! And if you can’t make it to Philly, you can get the Virtual Ticket as a standalone pass!

We are excited to hear which sessions you are planning to attend in person. Please feel free to share this with us in the Podcast Movement Community group on Facebook.

There’s nothing like the live stage

Greetings PM Family,

It is no secret that we love what happens live on stages! We always have. Whether it’s enjoying an episode of Saturday Night Live, or watching a local high school play, the live element often creates a memory that you never forget. It could be attending a concert, or rewatching a video from an infamous moment such as the Beatles performing on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964…live moments on stages are something that we celebrate, and one more reason why we love in-person events!

This year on the Podcast Movement stages: something new.

We’ve always had different “tracks” of sessions to choose from, depending on your area of interest. However this year we’ve made it even easier to find the sessions most relevant to you, and immerse yourself as much (or as little) in those specific topics as you’d like!

This year we unveil our track specific stages. So if you’re coming to PM18 looking to learn everything there is to know about spreading the word about your show, then the Marketing Stage is where you want to be. Looking to learn all about the inside workings of podcasting? Then the Industry Track is the place to park. Check out all the stages here.

We aim to make our stages better every year, and this is possible due to incredible support from our sponsors. Being Present
More speakers have been added to the PM18 lineup, including Kameel Stanley & Tim Lloyd of We Live HereSee the complete lineup (as it stands now), and keep an eye out for even more additions in the weeks to come!

Meaningful Experience
Here’s some basic podcasting advice from the good people at Basecamp, and some detailed pre-production advice from PM18 speaker Amanda McLoughlin.

Be Heard
In case you missed it, Podcast Movement was honored to feature some of the great mothers from this community for Mother’s Day! Please consider checking them out and saying hello!

Rare Occurrence
James Cridland from Podnews recently discovered a company that you can pay to get you to the top of Apple Podcasts. We agree that the “pay to game the system” strategy is a losing one. Rob Walch of Libsyn recently spoke with Apple, and said that shows that pay for this strategy are being blocked from the platform. Stay away!

We appreciate you being a part of this community. Our version of the “family reunion” is this summer in Philadelphia. We are looking forward to seeing many of you there, and hoping that the rest of you can either make it or make plans to join us via the Virtual Ticket!

We have more great news next week, so stay tuned!

You sound great,
Team PM18

Christie Wheeler – Underwhelmed

In the Summer of 2017, best friends and sorority sisters, Christie Wheeler and Nicole Kokinos, decided to start a podcast centered around the ridiculousness and hilarity that has ensued during their everyday lives working in mediocre jobs (Recruiter and Teacher accordingly) in the mediocre cities of Richmond, VA and Baltimore, MD. They decided to name this masterpiece Underwhelmed.

One half of the self proclaimed dynamic duo, Christie, is also a mom to the highly energetic, funny, and most adorable toddler in all the land, Madeline. Madeline recently made her podcast debut during Episode 29, however, she didn’t have much to say at the time.

Aside from being a cool mom while hanging out with Madeline, Christie also enjoys spending time with her husband, Kevin, and dog, Galileo. When she can find time she enjoys exercising and cooking, and she loves watching Dateline, comedy specials, and anything Bravo. I guess you could just call her Basic.

Although being a full time working mom and podcaster can be exhausting at times, Christie wouldn’t change it for the world. She has loved every moment of her podcast journey and all the extra time she has gotten to spend with Nicole while they work on their “craft”.

Podcast Movement’s got talent!

The “Got Talent” franchise is a global reality television series watched by millions of people around the world. It features the world’s most talented (but not yet famous) performers: singers, dancers, magicians, comedians and more. They perform for celebrity judges, competing to win a life-changing prize, as well as viewers’ hearts.

Podcast Movement’s got talent as well! Every year the speaker lineup gets better. Every year the exhibitors, workshops, meetups and networking events gets better.

Similar to the Got Talent franchise, Podcast Movement strongly believes in giving podcasters a chance to bring their A-game. We do this every year by offering an open speaker submission process, plus providing additional speaking events such as Ignite.

We even made events like PMx and the Academy of Podcasters Awards free to the public, so local podcasters not attending the rest of Podcast Movement could still participate! And we’re always evolving to continue to provide opportunities to members of the community, which leads us to…

And the winners are…

In 2018, Podcast Movement launched a new scholarship program to give a deserving few new podcasters, who are not able to afford to attend on their own, the opportunity to win a scholarship to attend the full event in Philadelphia, and act as brand ambassadors for PM18.

We had nearly 100 podcasters send us their scholarship applications, but like what happens on Got Talent, most unfortunately received the Big Red “X”, as we could only choose 6 scholarship recipients. That said – it’s time to announce the “auditions” that made it through to Philadelphia.

Betsy Cardenas – The Currently
Catherine Hefferan – Happy Soup Podcast
Laala Matias – LAaLALand Alert!!
Laura Gee – fitT1Dfoodie Life With Diabetes
Melinda Hasbrouck – Couch Sessions with Melinda Hasbrouck
